Labor Day falls on September 5 this year, paying tribute to the efforts of American workers and their fight for better pay, standards and conditions.
Since June 1894, the first Monday of each September has been taken as a federal holiday, recognizing workers' rights and the hard work people contribute. It is the last holiday before the fall and people often celebrate with parades, parties and picnics.
There isn't a traditional greeting for this federal holiday, but there are many different ways to mark the occasion.
If you want to send a loved one or colleagues a message, here are some ideas from others that you could use:
"Have a safe and happy Labor Day. Every day your work is valuable and it deserves to be recognised. Relax and enjoy the day off, have a happy and safe Labor Day."
"Without your tireless work and efforts, our company would not function. Please take this last summer day off, Happy Labor Day!"
"Happy Labor Day to our staff, customers and partners. Take a day off and enjoy one last summer hurrah!"
"Warm wishes to you on Labor Day. Strength and power to all workers."
"Today is the day we pay tribute to the high spirits of laborers who work hard every day. Happy Labor Day to one and all."
"For all those who work hard all around the year, today is the day for them to relax and do nothing.... Warm wishes on Labor Day."
"A very big thank you to all those who work hard and are an inspiration to us all. Let's express our gratitude on Labor Day."
"As far as I know, there's not a popular greeting, nothing equivalent on Labor Day to 'Merry Christmas' or 'Will you be my Valentine?' There's no traditional catchphrase. But I think it'd be great to create one," Esquire journalist and author AJ Jacobs told Newsweek.
"Maybe we should play up the idea of gratitude. Like 'Have a grateful Labor Day.' Or else recognize one of the heroes of labor, like Frances Perkins. Perkins was U.S. Secretary of Labor in the 1930s, who was crucial in creating the weekend."
"The weekend didn't just happen. Perkins and others fought for it. She was a major force behind the 1938 Fair Labor Standards Act, which established a 40-hour work week and made weekends possible (and helped ban child labor and improve workplace safety) Thank you Secretary Perkins!!!"
