Efren Afante Meteorologist

Afante’s meteorological history is strong.  After graduating from the College of Atmospheric and Geographic Sciences of the University of Oklahoma, he worked with the mobile radars of the National Severe Storms Laboratory.  His research experience includes lightning detection with scientists from the University of Florida and a major research project on tornado-VORTEX2. He also helped the National Weather Center in Norman, Oklahoma, analyze data collected from various tornadic storms, hurricane deployments, and other projects.

He switched from research to broadcasting in 2013, starting at WJTV, the CBS station in Jackson, Mississippi, where his knowledge was extremely important in covering the 2014 severe tornado outbreak and rare winter snow and ice storm.  Being a morning meteorologist, Afante joined WLTX in 2015, working side by side with Jim Gandy during the severe storms in South Carolina, including the 2015 devastating flood of Columbia, 2016 Hurricane Matthew, 2017 Hurricane Irma, and 2018 Hurricane Florence.
